About
November, 2025 we closed our doors. This was our story:
The Taleless Dog was a locally owned, independent book seller. Located in Berea, Kentucky, the store served as the only bookstore in Madison and surrounding counties. The store opened June 4, 2022 in the 103-year-old Sunshine Ballard Cottage directly behind the Log House Craft Gallery (the oldest and longest running craft gallery in the state of Kentucky). The space was intimate and quaint - just what you want in your neighborhood bookstore. We had thousands of adult, young adult and kids books. We also had a great selection of gifts for the booklover in your life.
The name....... everyone always wanted to know about the name. Well, for months, we toiled with what to call the store. We knew we wanted to use a play on words somehow, so we generated long lists of book-related homophones. We kept landing on the word tale. Then we both looked down at our dogs, neither of whom have a tail, and said at the same time - The Taleless Dog! We love our dogs, and being able to incorporate them into this life journey made it all the more special. And when we look back over the years, we realized that most of our dogs did not have tails (Schnauzers, Boxers, now an Aussie and Boston). So, this felt right.
Then in March of this year, a tail-less cat showed up on our doorstep. We named her Nora, and she is now the official greeter at the bookstore. If you visit, you will surely fall in love with Nora.

Our goals were always to offer outstanding customer service and to provide a local source for everyone's reading needs. Our store was like a candy store for bibliophiles. We hope we met our goals and we hope we brought some joy to the readers in Central Kentucky.
Now it's time for us to move to our next chapter. We thank everyone who helped make our business a success.
