.We get many, many requests to carry books from both self-published and traditionally published authors. Here’s a run-down of commonly requested info. Please send us an email at thetalelessdog@icloud.com if you have additional questions or would like to send us information about your book.
I wrote a book, will you carry it?
We support as many authors as we can. That said, we simply don’t have room to carry every book we’d like. With so many self-publishing resources available these days we get dozens of emails each week from authors interested in having us carry their books. Those authors living in the immediate area are in the most demand as far as self-published books go and are more likely to be a good fit here.
If your book has been published through a traditional publisher and we feel we have the appropriate audience for it, we will order it through them or one of our regular distributors on standard industry terms. If your book is self-published or not available through our regular distributors, or is only available on a non-returnable basis or without the standard terms, we may decide to purchase from you directly. If we decide your book is a good fit for our store we generally start with 1-2 copies, depending on genre, and reorder as they sell. We may also consider consignment.
Consignment
Books must be professionally bound with the title printed on the spine (people won’t notice your book if they can’t see the title when it’s on the shelf), and we go with the standard 60/40 split as far as payment goes–you, the author, will get 60% of the retail price if you provide your book directly to us. Copies left at or mailed to the store will be considered a free review copy.
Please email us with your book information. We may not be able to accommodate walk-in visits without an appointment or telephone inquiries, as we have limited staff and when our doors are open we’re focused on helping customers, pricing and shelving books, and other day to day activities which keep the doors open. When emailing us information about your book please include your name. Tell us if you're local, the book title, publication date, the ISBN, a link to a website with info about your book, what your local target audience will be here in Berea, and how you plan to promote your book here at The Taleless Dog. Send the info to thetalelessdog@icloud.com.
Please print the document at the bottom of this page and bring it with the books you wish for us to review for consignment.
Can I have a book signing at your store?
If you would like to have a book signing at our store, please email us at thetalelessdog@icloud.com.
We like to work with authors who have a plan to help market and promote their event. As the author of the book, you have a following of readers and can reach a wider audience that we can alone. Any time you can add an element of uniqueness to your signing, it has a better chance of success. Is there something special we can do at your signing that will be interactive or create a memorable experience? Those extra touches can help draw a larger crowd. “Think of how you can create events around the themes of the book that are fun, unique, and provide a story local bloggers would want to write about,” says Brent Underwood, a partner at marketing and PR firm Brass Check. Collaborating with other authors in your genre to create a larger, themed evening will also draw a larger crowd and all parties will benefit.
To get the word out, authors may consider drafting press releases about their books or events and sending them to editors or posting them on services such as PRWeb. Whatever approach they use, authors should try to identify what editors might find newsworthy and lead with that. For example, a press release for an event about a romance book in January or February could focus on Valentine’s Day.
